Power Units
Power is a physical quantity equal to the rate of change, transformation, transmission or consumption of the energy of the system. Also, the power is equal to the ratio of the work performed over a certain period of time to this time interval.
International System of Units (SI)
In the International System of Units (SI), the power unit is a Watt [W] equal to one Joule [J] divided by a second.
1 watt is defined as the power at which work takes place in 1 joule for 1 second of time. Thus, watt is a derived unit of measurement and is related to other SI units by the following ratio:
- W = J / s = kg·m² / s
- W = H·m / s
- W = V·A
- 1 Megawatt [MW] = 1000 kW
- 1 Kilowatt [kW] = 1000 W
- 1 Volt-Ampere [V·A] = 1 W
Non-SI metric units
- 1 Gigacalorie per second [Gcal / s] = 4186.8 MW
- 1 Kilocalorie per second [kcal / s] = 4186.8 W
- 1 Calorie per second [cal / s] = 4.1868 W
- 1 Gigacalorie per hour [Gcal / h] = 1.163 MW
- 1 Kilocaloria per hour [kcal / h] = 1.163 W
